It seeks to shed light on the organisation of grid planning processes and civil society engagement in five countries. The case studies provided do not claim to present a comprehensive overview, but offer some diverse examples from which lessons can be drawn. The European TYNDP is the oldest and most established process. The Australian ISP, although relatively new, translates the regional model of the TYNDP to the national level. The example from Vietnam is state-driven but includes as a recommendation a variety of scenarios that have been developed from civil society and academia (but not as part of the planning commission). Japan’s grid development process can be considered a mix of the Australian and Vietnamese examples, in which a committee is consulted on the scenario and on grid planning. Civil society is not directly involved but is indirectly consulted by two of the three sub-committees via specific submissions. In Chile, civil society is not involved in the scenario development, but provides inputs to the spatial planning process. | ||
