520 _aThis document presents a review of recent international literature on findings about energy policies, programs, and challenges facing the Latin American and Caribbean region. The analysis recognizes the particular circumstances and needs of each country, as well as the key goals of the initiatives for energy integration in the region. It refers to the energy sector as the set of all economic activities related to the use of renewable and non-renewable resources for the production, delivery and consumption of energy in its different forms (electricity, heat and fuels). This definition also includes the optimization of energy use through energy efficiency and conservation. To approach the complex network of relationships, the challenges of the sector in the region are presented and their close interrelation and their different levels of importance are recognized according to the conditions of each country.
