The heavy use of biomass fuels in the third world is often implicated as a major cause of deforestation and consequent greenhouse gas emissions. Proposed solutions include the promotion of more efficient wood - burning stoves, substitution by non - wood fuels, and fast - growing energy woodlots. This paper starts by questioning these widely - held assumptions. It then considers the last of these proposed options in the form of tree - growing by farmers as a greenhouse mitigation strategy.
