This report presents the work carried out within the framework of Axis 1 of the Energy Big Push (EBP) project, which aimed to develop a process for collecting, structuring and managing data on public and private investments in energy research, development and demonstration (RD&D). The report presents the methodology and tools that enabled the creation of a comprehensive data set on public and publicly-oriented investments in innovation allocated to different categories of energy technologies. It includes a description of the database mapping process; the database analysis; and the development and application of the methodology for the production of innovative statistics on energy RD&D investments in Brazil. In addition, it presents solutions for improving data collection and analysis, as well as statistics on energy innovation in the country. The concept of research, development and demonstration (RD&D) includes: basic research, whenclearly oriented towards the development of energy-related technologies; applied research; experimental development; and demonstration, which includes the design, construction and operation of a technology prototype on a commercial or quasi-commercial scale to provide technical, economic and environmental information to the productive sector, funding entities, regulators, and policy makers. The collected RD&D data cover all types of energy, and is based on the international classification applied and developed by the International Energy Agency (IEA). This wide scope made it possible to understand the relative share of RD&D expenditures on low-carbon and other energy sources within the full amount of investments in energy RD&D. This comprehensive approach also allows for international comparisons with other data based on the IEA classification.
