The theorenical maximum efficiency of utilization of the energy in sunlight by photosynthesis is 8 percent. The highest plant growth rates ever measured about 4.5 percent of total daily solar radiation for short periods of time. Thus, plants do not come near to their theoretical limit of perfomance. Efforts at genetic engineering for more efficient photosynthensis must be directed toward minimizing the limitations to photosynthesis.
