N2  - The purpose of this paper is to review some of the key issues and trends related to energy in the United States, with particular attention to the electricity sector and to the development of shale oil and gas, in order to set the basis for a meaningful dialogue between the U.S. and Latin America on emerging energy issues. The U.S. experience in the electricity sector and in the development of shale oil and gas offers many rich examples of how the complex relationships between markets, technology, regulation, and public policy can play out, and also of how markets are being constrained, challenged, and forced to innovate by new technology developments and public policy pronouncements
