The federal government, assisted by the territorial government, has embarked upon comprehensive claims negotiations to resolve outstanding aboriginal title to all lands and waters in the northwest territories. Four aboriginal claims agreements have now been negotiated. The agreements recognize aboriginal interests in wildlife and resources, and create joint management for decisions affecting the claim area.
