The Netherlands have a long history in windmill technology. At the turn of century about 9000 windmills with diameters between 20 and 30 meters were operational. Cheap coal and steam engines and later, cheap oil obliterated the use of wind energy. Howere in 1973 the concept revived and in 1976, wind energy research programmes were initiated. The new system hardly resemble the old classical windmills.
